Burpee Broad Jump · Knee Valgus on Landing (Anterior)

Why this matters

The side view tells the power-and-economy story (hinge, launch, extension, shock absorption, balance). It says nothing about whether the knees cave inward on landing. Landing from a broad jump under accumulating fatigue is a classic medial-knee-collapse moment — both an injury risk (knee, ACL) and a power leak, because a knee that buckles inward can't drive the next rep cleanly.

What good looks like

  • Knee tracks in line with the foot on contact — hip, knee, and ankle stacked.
  • Both knees behave symmetrically (no single-sided collapse).
  • Alignment holds even on the late, fatigued reps.

Common faults

Valgus Collapse

The knee drifts medially (inward) of the hip-to-ankle line on landing. Often worse on one side and worse as fatigue builds.

Causes: weak glute medius / hip abductors, fatigue, landing too long or off-balance.

Effect: injury risk plus a power leak into the next rep.

Coaching cues

  • "Knees over toes" — the canonical valgus cue.
  • "Spread the floor" — drives the knees out on contact.
  • Single-leg and banded hip-abduction work — builds the strength that prevents collapse.

How to draw

  1. Use an anterior (front-view) clip of the station, tagged separately from the lateral clip.
  2. Pause on the landing (initial-contact) frame.
  3. Line 1 (thigh): hip → knee. Line 2 (shank): knee → ankle.
  4. Inward deviation of the knee from the hip-to-ankle line is valgus.

This is the one Burpee Broad Jump check that needs an anterior clip — the lateral view physically cannot see frontal-plane knee motion.
