Why this matters
The movement standard requires a controlled two-foot landing. If the centre of mass lands well off the base of support, the athlete stutter-steps to recover — losing time — or pitches over and earns a no-rep. A landing where the hips stack over the ankles is balanced, repeatable, and flows straight into the next burpee.
What good looks like
- Hips land over the midfoot/ankle — a near-vertical hip→ankle line.
- A controlled, two-foot landing with no stutter-step.
- The athlete drops immediately into the next rep.
Common faults
Unbalanced (> 22°)
The hips are well off the base. High risk of a forward fall and a no-rep under the controlled-landing standard.
Drifting (12–22°)
The centre of mass is off the base enough that a stutter-step is likely to recover — small time leaks that add up.
Coaching cues
- "Land under the hips" — stacks the CoM over the base.
- "Stick it" — demands a controlled, balanced catch.
- Shorten the jump slightly — better a controlled rep than a long one you can't land.
How to draw
- Pause on the frame where both feet first contact the carpet.
- First point: greater trochanter (hip).
- Second point: lateral malleolus (ankle).
- The acute angle vs vertical shows how stacked the landing is — small is balanced.
Related measurements
- Knee Flexion (Landing) — same frame; how the load is absorbed.
- Launch Vector (Takeoff) — an over-long or too-flat launch is what forces an unbalanced landing.
