Why this matters
A broad jump travels forward, so the torso has to point forward too. At the load, the trunk should be pitched toward the floor ahead — aligning the body with the line of travel and helping load the hinge. A torso that stays upright sends the jump up instead of out.
What good looks like
- Torso pitched forward, chest pointing toward the landing spot.
- Trunk angle pairs with a high hip hinge — the two move together.
- A braced, flat back (not a rounded one).
Common faults
Too Upright (> 50°)
The torso is too vertical. The jump goes up rather than out — wasted hang time and shorter reps.
Over-Pitched (< 25°)
The torso is almost horizontal. When the legs fire, the athlete risks pitching over the toes and stumbling on the launch or landing.
Coaching cues
- "Chest toward the floor ahead" — sets the forward pitch.
- "Hinge the hips to tip the torso" — links trunk pitch to the hinge.
- "Stay braced" — protects the back at the forward angle.
How to draw
- Pause on the same loading-stance frame as the Hip Hinge.
- First point: greater trochanter (hip).
- Second point: acromion (shoulder).
- The acute angle vs horizontal is the forward trunk pitch.
