Rowing · Body Angle at Pivot

Target10° – 30° forward of vertical — should match the catch body angle

torso (shoulder → hip) vs. vertical at the moment the body has finished pivoting forward and the seat is about to start moving.

Why this matters

The pivot is the recovery's preparation move: the body sets its catch position before the slide moves. If the body completes its pivot here, the slide can travel forward without further posture changes, and the catch posture is ready and waiting. If the slide starts before the body has finished pivoting, the catch position has to be assembled on the fly — usually it ends up too flat (body never finished) or shifts at the last moment (rushed slide).

This measurement is one of the strongest predictors of catch quality. An athlete whose pivot body angle matches their catch body angle within ~3° has a reliable, repeatable catch. An athlete whose pivot is much flatter than their catch is "snatching" the catch position on the slide forward — which costs power and consistency.

What good looks like

The torso has pivoted to the same forward lean as the catch (10–30° forward). The arms are straight, the seat is at its back-stop, the knees haven't yet broken. The athlete looks momentarily settled at the front-stop posture before the slide begins.

Common faults

  • Under-pivoted (< 10°) — the body hasn't reached the catch lean yet. The slide will start with the body still mostly upright, and the catch will be flat. Often a hip-flexor or hamstring restriction.
  • Over-pivoted (> 30°) — the body has gone past the catch target. Sets up an over-reached catch, with the chest collapsing or the spine rounding.

Coaching cues

  • "Set the body, then the slide." The cue rhythm matches the pivot-then-roll sequence.
  • "Pivot pause." Drill: at the finish, hands away, body pivot, pause for one count, then slide.
