Rowing · Back-Before-Arms Sequencing

Δt between the back starting to open and the arms starting to break (elbows bending).

Why this matters

The drive sequence is legs → back → arms. This tool checks the second handoff: the back swing must finish accelerating the handle before the arms draw it the last few inches. The arms are the smallest muscles in the chain — they should do the least work, and last.

Breaking the arms early — "rowing with the arms" — bleeds away the leg-and-back power that's already moving the handle.

If the elbows bend while the back is still opening, the strong leg-and-back drive gets short-circuited through the weak biceps, which fatigue fast and cap the stroke length.

What good looks like

  • Straight arms hang off the handle through the leg drive and back swing.
  • The elbows only bend once the body has opened past vertical.
  • The draw to the body is a crisp final action, not a continuous pull from the catch.

Common faults

Arms Break Early (Δt < −50 ms)

The elbows bend before the back finishes swinging. The arms try to do the leg-and-back's job.

Causes: anxiety to connect to the handle, weak posterior chain, or muscle-memory from pulling-dominant patterns.

Effect: premature bicep fatigue, shorter and weaker strokes, capped power output.

Simultaneous (−50 ms ≤ Δt ≤ +50 ms)

Back and arms engaging together. Loses some sequential transfer and taxes the biceps earlier than necessary.

Coaching cues

  • "Straight arms until the body opens" — keeps the arms passive through the early drive.
  • "Hang off the handle, swing, then draw" — names the three-beat order.
  • Legs-and-body-only drill — row with the arms locked straight to feel the back's contribution.

How to mark

  1. In mid-drive, after the legs are driving and the body is opening through vertical.
  2. Step 1: find the frame the back first opens — the trunk begins swinging back.
  3. Step 2: find the frame the arms first break — the elbows begin to bend (the lateral epicondyle starts moving toward the body).
  4. Δt = frame 2 − frame 1. Positive means the back led.
