Rowing · Hands-Before-Knees Sequencing

Δt between the hands clearing the knees and the knees starting to break (bend) on the recovery.

Why this matters

The recovery runs the drive sequence in reverse: arms → body → legs. After the finish, the hands extend away, the body pivots forward over the hips, and only then do the knees break to let the seat slide forward. The handle has to travel back over the knees, so the knees must stay flat until the hands have passed them.

If the knees break early, the handle hits a wall — it has to detour up and over the rising knees.

That detour disrupts the handle path, wastes motion, and rushes the athlete into the next catch off-balance. It's the most common recovery fault and a rhythm-killer over a long piece.

What good looks like

  • Hands push away from the body first; the handle travels flat and low.
  • The handle clears the knee line before the knees begin to rise.
  • The slide forward is the last thing to happen — unhurried.

Common faults

Early Knee Break (Δt < −50 ms)

The knees bend before the hands clear them. The handle must lift over the knees, breaking its flat path.

Causes: rushing the recovery, anxiety to get back to the catch, or never grooving the reversed order.

Effect: handle collides with the knees, disrupted rhythm, a rushed and unbalanced catch.

Simultaneous (−50 ms ≤ Δt ≤ +50 ms)

Knees rising as the hands clear. The handle path gets bumpy and the recovery feels rushed.

Coaching cues

  • "Hands away, then knees" — names the order.
  • "Hands, body, slide" — the three-beat recovery rhythm.
  • Ratio drills — slow the recovery to a 1:2 drive:recovery ratio so the sequence has room to breathe.

How to mark

  1. In the recovery phase, as the arms extend away from the finish.
  2. Step 1: find the frame the hands clear the knees — the handle/wrist passes over the knee line.
  3. Step 2: find the frame the knees first break — the knees begin to rise as the seat starts forward.
  4. Δt = frame 2 − frame 1. Positive means the hands cleared first.
