Wall Ball — Rep Rate

Target16 – 24 reps/min pacing the 100-rep set

mark a window (start frame → end frame), count the wall-ball reps inside it; the tool reports **reps per minute**.

Why this matters

Wall balls close the race: 100 reps of squat-to-target throw with tired legs and shoulders. Rep rate is the pacing read, and the trick here is that the cheapest place to lose time is the transitions — the rest stolen at the catch and the pause before the throw — not the reps themselves. A low rate almost always means extra rest at those two points rather than slow movement. A high rate means little or no rest, which is only sustainable in short blocks before the quads or shoulders fail and force a long, unplanned break.

The athletes who pace this best rarely sprint; they pick a rate they can hold and break the set deliberately (e.g. sets of 20 with a planned breath) rather than going to failure. Rep rate measured across an early window and a late window shows whether the chosen pace held or whether the set fell apart into involuntary rest.

How it's measured here — and the slow-motion trap

This is a windowed count. Scrub to the start of a clean rep (e.g. the catch, or the bottom of the squat) to open the window, scrub to the same point of a later rep to close it, count the reps between. Rate = reps ÷ window-seconds × 60.

If the clip is phone slow-motion (120/240 fps captured, 30 fps timestamps), an uncorrected rate reads 4–8× low. Set Capture FPS in the Clip Inspector to the true capture rate so the tool rescales to real time.

What good looks like

16–24 reps/min held steady (or in deliberate planned blocks) across the 100 reps, each rep showing a full squat to depth and a clean catch into the next without redlining the shoulders or quads.

Common faults

  • Below pace (< 16 reps/min) — usually extra rest at the catch or before the throw rather than slow reps. Tighten the transitions before assuming you need to move faster.
  • Above sustainable (> 24 reps/min) — sprint pace, holdable only in short blocks. Going here early almost always forces a long failure break later. Break the set on your own terms instead.
  • Cliff-edge decay — a fast open that collapses to a stall is the worst-case pattern; the early window reads "above sustainable", the late window "below pace".

Coaching cues

  • "Catch and go — don't rest at the top." Recovers the time most athletes leak in transitions.
  • "Plan your breaks before you need them." A deliberate 20-20-20-20-20 holds a higher average rate than going to failure.
