Wall Ball · Terminal Knee Extension at Release

Target170° – 180° (full leg lockout / triple extension)

interior angle hip → knee → ankle on the frame the ball breaks contact with the fingertips.

Why this matters

The wall ball is powered by the legs, not the arms. The drive should travel up the kinetic chain — ankles, knees, hips — and reach full leg extension right as the ball leaves the hands. The arms only guide the ball onto the target.

If the knees are still bent at 140° when the ball releases, the athlete is throwing it with their shoulders and triceps.

The shoulders are the smallest engine in the chain. Rely on them and they fail long before 100 reps — throw height drops, the ball stops reaching the target, and the set falls apart.

What good looks like

  • Legs reaching near-lockout exactly as the ball releases.
  • A clear "float" — the ball leaves on the momentum of the leg drive, not an arm push.
  • Often a slight rise onto the toes (ankle plantarflexion) to add height.

Common faults

Arm Throw (< 150°)

The legs are still bent at release, so the arms finish the throw. The cardinal energy leak on wall balls.

Causes: mistiming the throw (releasing before the legs finish), or under-powered leg drive forcing an arm compensation.

Effect: rapid shoulder fatigue, dropping throw height late in the set.

Partial (150–165°)

Most of the leg drive transferred, with a small arm contribution. Minor timing refinement.

Coaching cues

  • "Drive through the floor, the ball floats up" — sequences legs before arms.
  • "Throw at the top of the jump" — times release to full extension.
  • "Save the shoulders" — names the consequence of arm-throwing.

How to draw

  1. Pause on the exact frame the ball breaks contact with the fingertips.
  2. First line: greater trochanter → lateral femoral condyle (thigh).
  3. Second line: lateral femoral condyle → lateral malleolus (shank).
  4. Interior angle at the knee is the reading.
