Rowing · Body Angle at Catch

Target10° – 30° forward of vertical

torso line (shoulder → hip) vs. vertical at the catch frame.

Why this matters

The body angle is the elastic load on the posterior chain at the catch. If the torso pivots forward enough, the hamstrings, glutes, and back muscles are pre-stretched and ready to fire. Too flat and the drive becomes a quad-only effort, robbing the hips of work and limiting both power and endurance. Too far over and the rib cage rounds — you've sacrificed the rigid lever the back needs to transmit leg force to the handle.

This is the single most common compensation seen at the catch in Hyrox athletes coming from a strength background: they sit upright because their hamstrings are tight, and they push harder with the quads to compensate. It looks strong but it's about 15 W less efficient per stroke.

Watch the landmark carefully — measure to the greater trochanter (the bony point at the top of the femur), not to the iliac crest. The crest is ~10 cm higher and gives an inflated reading.

What good looks like

A clean 1-and-1 pivot — about 1 o'clock on a clock face if the torso were the hour hand at the catch. The chest is forward over the thighs, the spine is long (not rounded), and the shoulders are slightly ahead of the hips. The arms hang straight from the shoulders to the handle.

Common faults

  • Flat catch (< 10°) — body sits upright. Hamstrings can't load. Often a mobility issue (tight hamstrings or hip flexors limiting the pivot).
  • Over-pivoted (> 30°) — typically paired with thoracic rounding ("shoulders chasing the handle"). The lower back rounds with it and takes the drive load. Common cause of lumbar discomfort over long pieces.

Coaching cues

  • "Hinge from the hips, chest tall." Cues the right movement (hip hinge) without sacrificing the spine position.
  • "Reach long, but proud." Gets the body forward without the chest collapsing.
