Ankle Plantarflexion at Push-Off

Why this matters

Ankle plantarflexion is the final flick of the kinetic chain — the calf complex (gastrocnemius + soleus) and Achilles tendon delivering one last impulse before the foot leaves the ground. Most of the elastic energy stored during midstance (when the calf loaded eccentrically) is returned here as forward propulsion. A weak or restricted plantarflexion bleeds energy that the runner has to make up for somewhere else in the chain — usually with extra hip work, which fatigues faster.

The measurement reports the deviation from a neutral 90° resting position rather than the raw angle between the two lines. So 20°–30° means the foot is 20°–30° past perpendicular to the shank — pointing down toward the ground in a clear push-off line.

What good looks like

At toe-off the shank is roughly vertical (or slightly forward of vertical) and the foot points DOWN past 90° in line with the toes. Total plantarflexion sits in the 20°–30° band. The Achilles tendon is at full stretch-recoil; the calf is visibly contracted.

Common faults

  • Insufficient plantarflexion (<15°) — calf weakness or stiff Achilles. Often pairs with low cadence and high vertical oscillation. The runner is using hip extension alone for propulsion, which is metabolically expensive.
  • Excessive plantarflexion (>35°) — uncommon. May indicate over-reliance on toe-off in a sprinter pattern rather than economical distance running.
  • Asymmetric L vs R (>5°) — frequently the trailing edge of an unresolved calf strain or unilateral Achilles tightness.

Coaching cues

  • Calf strength — heavy single-leg calf raises, eccentric heel drops over a step. The capacity to produce force at this end-range is largely strength-bound.
  • Achilles mobility — knee-to-wall test for ankle dorsiflexion. Restricted dorsiflexion during midstance limits the energy that's available to plantarflex into.
  • Cue: "Toes through, calves through." Helps runners feel the line of force coming out the foot rather than driving from the hip alone.

Related measurements

  • Hip Extension at Push-Off — the upstream link in the same kinetic chain. Together these two angles describe the push-off impulse.
  • Foot Strike Angle — strikers with heavy forefoot landings tend to plantarflex more at push-off; heel-strikers less.
  • Midstance Knee Flexion — soft-knee midstance loads the calf more, which feeds plantarflexion. Stiff midstance bypasses both.
