Stride Angle

Target4° – 8° forward of vertical

Why this matters

Stride angle is the cleanest single number for "are you over-striding?" The tibia at contact tells you where the foot has landed relative to the knee, and the knee — at running cadences — sits roughly under the hip. A small forward lean (~5°) means the foot lands just ahead of the body, which is efficient. A pronounced forward lean (15°+) means the foot is reaching out ahead of the body, which creates a braking force and demands the quadriceps absorb a hard eccentric load — a primary mechanism for patellofemoral pain.

The angle is also a sensitive fatigue marker. As runners tire, stride length usually drops a little but stride angle drops a lot — the body shortens the leg's swing to conserve energy. Tracking the change across the first and last minutes of a run is more informative than any single measurement.

What good looks like

The tibia is close to vertical or 5–10° past vertical (lower end of the leg pointing slightly forward). At higher speeds the angle naturally increases (more reach), but should stay below ~15° for endurance pace.

Common faults

  • Vertical or backward-leaning tibia (≤0°) — the foot lands directly under or slightly behind the knee. Often a side-effect of trying too hard to "land under the hip" — produces a stuttering, very short stride.
  • Far-forward tibia (15°+) — classic over-stride pattern. Pair this with a hard heel strike and you have a high cumulative impact loader.

Coaching cues

  • "Bring your foot down, not out." Visualising the foot dropping under the knee shortens the reach.
  • "Quick feet." Bumping cadence by 5 % at the same pace mechanically reduces stride angle.
