Stride Angle at Push-Off
angle of the trailing-leg tibia (toe → knee) vs. vertical at toe-off.
Why this matters
The trailing-leg stride is the "back side" of the stride pair. Where Stride Angle at Initial Contact tells you how the leg lands in front of the body, the push-off stride angle tells you how far the leg has extended behind the body before leaving the ground. The two numbers together describe the total stride length much better than either alone.
A short trailing stride (15° or less) usually points at the same upstream issue as limited hip extension — the leg simply can't travel back far enough during stance. The visible signature is a "shuffling" gait, often paired with a forward-leaning trunk. A long trailing stride (35°+) typically means the runner is over-pushing — staying on the ground too long, generating force after the body has already passed forward of the foot. That's a common pattern in fatigued runners trying to maintain pace.
The most useful comparison is L vs R. Asymmetry of more than 5° between the two trailing strides is the single most reliable indicator of a unilateral hip-flexor restriction or weak-side glute. Mirror it against the IC stride angles to confirm.
What good looks like
At toe-off the tibia leans 20–30° behind vertical. The leg has finished propelling the body forward and is about to swing through to the next IC. The foot rolls cleanly off the ball; toes leave the ground last.
Common faults
- Short trailing stride (≤15°) — limited hip extension upstream, or weak glute. Often paired with anterior pelvic tilt.
- Long trailing stride (≥35°) — over-pushing. The runner stays on the ground past the optimal departure point, which adds braking load on the next step.
- L/R asymmetry >5° — unilateral restriction or weakness. Treat both sides but bias the rehab to the limited one.
Coaching cues
- A-skips and B-skips: drill the alternating extension/recovery pattern with deliberate trail-leg awareness.
- "Push the ground back." Conscious cue that orients the runner to the trailing leg.
